Adding a Emerson Roc Device in OnPing

This guide will explain step by step, how to add an Emerson Roc Device in OnPing using a FloBoss 107 Flow Manager as an example device. This guide will also explain how to configure the driver for this device in OnPing.

Step 1: Connect Serial to USB cord to the device #

Connect the Serial end of the Serial to USB converter to the LOI (Local Operator Interface) port at the top of the device. (Gray cord shown below).

For a more permanent serial connection, attach insulated wires to the RX, TX, and GND screw terminals on the first (most left) card labeled ‘CPU’ as shown below. The RX, TX and GND screw terminals are located in the section labeled ‘LOI’.

Next, connect the USB end of the Serial to USB converter to the PC executing the setup software for the device (ROCLINK 800). 

Step 2: Connect and Configure Device in ROCLINK 800 #

Log into ROCLINK 800 Configuration Software and establish connection between the device and the PC.

Double click ‘Device Connect’ at the top of the screen. In the event that the connection is not established on the first attempt, double click ‘Device Connect’ to try again.

Once the connection has been established, a window will display the text ‘CONNECTED’ as well as the Connection Port and Baud Rate. In this example, the Conn Port is 4 and the Baud Rate is 19200.

Now that the connection between the device and PC has been established, a screen simulating the device ports will appear as shown below.

In order to add this Roc device to OnPing, the TLP numbers will need to be configured. TLP is an acronym for Point Type, Logical Number, and Parameter. Navigate to the toolbar and click ‘Configure’. A dropdown menu will appear. Now select ‘Opcode Table’ to open the TLP number configuration window.

Next, click on the button labeled ‘…’ next to the TLP to display more information. 

A new window will appear showing the Point Type, Logical Number, and Parameter for that specific TLP. In this example the TLP for ‘FLW 1, CURFP’ is 10, 0, 1. The Point Type is 10 (AGA Flow Calculation Values), The Logical Number is 0 (FLW1), and the Parameter is 1(Static Pressure). 

Sometimes the TLP cannot be properly analyzed in this manner. To ensure the correct TLP number is being selected, navigate to the toolbar and select ‘Tools’ and then in the dropdown menu select ‘Options’. 

A window with additional options for the TLP configuration will appear. Change the Display of the TLP from ‘As Text’ to ‘As Numbers’ and click OK at the bottom of the window to save the changes.

Navigate back to the toolbar and select ‘Configure’ , then ‘Opcode Table’. Notice that the TLP numbers are now displayed as numbers instead of text. 

Step 3: Download and Install ROC Driver to Lumberjack #

First, Install driver on the serial connected Lumberjack. Navigate to the Lumberjack Application System Panel and locate the Lumberjack desired for driver installation. In this example, the Lumberjack is named ‘Shop 2 – LJ6’.

Click the checkbox next to the Lumberjack Serial value to view a dropdown window containing a summary of the Lumberjack. Ensure that the Lumberjack is connected. 

Double check that the Lumberjack is updating by navigating to the List button at the top right corner of the summary dropdown window. Select ‘Date / Time’ from the list to manually confirm the Lumberjack is updating.

Confirm that the current date / time is correct and is updating in real time. To ensure the Lumberjack is updating, watch the current time value increase in seconds, if the current time and date is not incrementing, try resetting the connection.

Once the correct date / time has been manually confirmed, navigate back to the List icon at the top right corner of the window and select ‘Apps’. 

Check to see if the ROC drivers are already installed. This step can be skipped if driver installation has been completed. In this example, the driver will be installed. Navigate to the ‘Available Apps’ search bar and enter ‘ roc ‘ to quicksearch the ROC driver application. 

Click the green download button to the right of ‘roc-tlp-server’ to download the application.

A browser popup window may appear prompting ‘Do you want to install roc-tlp-server?’. Click OK to download and install.

Once the confirmation is complete, a green notification in OnPing will appear in the bottom right corner of the screen stating that the Pack Install has been successfully queued for download and installation. 

After a few seconds of updating and installing, a new notification will appear stating that the package set has been successfully updated.

Navigate back to ‘Installed Apps’ and notice that ‘roc-tlp-server’ is at the top of the installed applications list. 

Step 4: Copy IP Address of Lumberjack #

Navigate to the toolbar in OnPing and click the ribbon icon to open the dropdown menu. Click ‘Control Parameters’ to open the IP address table. 

Locate the target Lumberjack, in this example Lumberjack 6 is being used. Note the IP address just to the right of the Serial value. In this example (Lumberjack) ‘6’ IP address is ‘10.7.5.11’.

Highlight the IP address and right click to engage the dropdown menu. Scroll to ‘Copy’ and left click.

Now that the IP address is in our cache, navigate to the ‘Admin Links’ Panel on the main dashboard by clicking the OnPing logo at the top left of the screen.

Step 5: Add a ‘roc-tlp’ Location to the Site #

Select ‘Admin Links’ from the Dashboard. This will open the Admin Links list. If the ‘Admin Links’ panel does not appear on the dashboard, contact the system administrator or OnPing support for additional information.

Navigate to ‘Add a roc-tlp’ on the list and click to add.

Select the location by starting with the company. In this example, ‘Demo’ company will be selected.

Select the Site(s). In this example ‘Demo Site 2 (RocTlp)’ is selected.

Once the Company and Site(s) have been selected, click the blue ‘+ New Location’ to the left side of the ‘Roc TLP Locations’ window.

A window will appear prompting for additional information about the new location. First, name the new location. In this example ‘Video Demo ROC’ is the name of the new location.

Click on the text bar just below ‘URL’ to enable text to be entered. Right click and select ‘Paste’ from the dropdown menu to paste the URL copied from Step 4.

In this example, the URL is ‘10.7.5.11’.

Navigate to the PLC URL text bar and left click to enable text. Type ‘ 127.0.0.1 ’ into the text bar. This URL may need to be pre-configured by OnPing support. Please contact OnPing support about future Lumberjacks networking with a ROC device in order to prepare the Lumberjack with the appropriate firmware.

Update the ‘Device Username’. In this example the device username is ‘LOI’. 

Update the Device Password to the default ‘ 1000 ’.

Select the Company. In this example company ‘Demo’ is selected.

Select the Site. In this example, ‘ Demo Site 2 (RocTlp) ’ is selected.

Select the Group. In this example ‘demoUsers’ group is selected. Note that the lowest priority group with the lowest permissions granted should be selected. 

Now that the information for the new Location has been updated, navigate to the bottom left side of the window and click the green ‘Add’ to save the location.

A notification will appear stating that the location parameters are being added and updated.

Once the location parameters have been saved, navigate to the locations list and click the site that was just updated. In this example, the site that the new location was added to was ‘Demo Site 2 (RocTlp)’ . Click the site to uncheck the box to refresh the location information to the right.

Click ‘Demo Site 2 (RocTlp)’ to display the added location information.

Confirm that the Location ‘Video Demo ROC’ has been added to the Roc Tlp locations list.

Note the Location Summary window that appears below the company, site, and locations lists. Ensure that the Time is correct.

Step 6: Add Configuration Widget Panel to the Dashboard #

Navigate to the home dashboard by clicking the OnPing logo at the top left of the browser window.

Click on the ‘Lumberjack Application System’ panel.

Navigate to the top right corner of the browser window and click the gray ‘Edit Dashboard’ button.

Once in Dashboard Edit mode, an option to add a panel will appear. Click ‘+ Add Panel’. 

Name the new panel. In this example the panel is named ‘ROC Configuration’. Select an Icon for the new panel. In this example the ‘cog’ icon is selected.

Once the panel information has been updated, click the blue ‘Save Changes’ button at the bottom of the window.

A notification will appear stating that the dashboard is being saved.

Add the configuration widget to the new panel. Navigate to the top right corner of the window and click the blue ‘+Widget’ button on the toolbar.

Scroll down to the ‘Controllers’ section of the widgets list and locate the ‘Roc TLP’ widget. Click the blue ‘Add’ button to the right of the widget name.

Once the widget has been added, save the panel. Navigate to the top right of the screen and click the blue ‘Save’ button on the toolbar.

Now that Dashboard has been properly updated, click the gray ‘Exit Edit Dashboard’ button to exit edit dashboard mode.

Step 7: Create New Point Type for the New Panel #

Navigate to the ‘ROC Configuration’ Panel on the Dashboard.

Select the Company. In this example the Company name is ‘Demo’.

Select the Site. In this example, the Site name is ‘Demo Site 2 (RocTlp).

Select the Location. In this example, the Location is ‘Video Demo ROC’.

A drop down window with Logical Point Number information will appear below. Click the blue ‘+ New Point Type’ button on the left side of the window. 

Create a new point type. In this example the new point type is ‘3’. After updating the point type, click the blue ‘+Row’ button just below the point type bar.

A new row will be created with additional ‘logical pointer’ and ‘parameter’ information. In this example the new Logical Point Number is ‘2’ and the new Parameter Number is ‘14’. Name the new Point Type in the description. In this example, the name is ‘Heater Temperature’.

Now that all the information for the new Pointer Type has been updated, click the green ‘Save’ button.

A notification will appear stating that the location has been updated successfully.

Step 8: Manually Confirm via ‘Demand Pull’ #

Refresh the location information but unchecking the checkbox next to the location and checking it again.

The information added to the location in Step 7 can now be seen in the location summary. To confirm the information is being ‘pulled in’ successfully, click the ‘Refresh’ icon and force a ‘demand pull’. This will force the data to be updated. 

A notification will appear in the browser window confirming the location has been updated.

Notice the Data Type, Value, and Last Update information has been updated to the most recent ‘pull’. In this example the Data Type is ‘TLPFloat’ and Value is ‘89.28513000’ and the Last Update is ‘01/13/2023, 10:12:04 AM’. The data from the ROC Device is now updating correctly, set up and ready to use in OnPing.
